A Fighting Fifth Place: Porsche Penske Motorsport at Road America

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship delivered another thrilling race at Road America, and while a podium finish wasn’t in the cards for the Porsche Penske Motorsport team, a hard-fought fifth-place finish for the #6 Porsche 963 is a testament to the team’s resilience and championship mindset.

The legendary Elkhart Lake circuit, known for its fast, sweeping corners, presented a significant challenge. Early on, the race was a chaotic affair, with the safety car deployed on the very first lap. A bold early pit stop for both Porsche Penske cars was a strategic gamble that, despite some on-track challenges and aggressive driving from competitors, ultimately paid off for the #6 car of Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet. They not only secured valuable points but also unofficially extended their lead in the GTP championship standings.

It was a more difficult day for the sister car, the #7 of Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy. A time penalty following a racing incident dropped them to eleventh place. However, they continue to hold second in the driver standings, keeping the pressure on their teammates.

Congratulations to the BMW M Team RLL for their winning strategy, and to all the teams who battled on track. While Porsche Penske Motorsport may be looking back with “mixed emotions,” as Director of Factory Motorsport LMDh Urs Kuratle put it, the team still holds a commanding position in the championship. With two races remaining, the title is well within reach. The team will be looking to regain their winning form and demonstrate a strong performance at the upcoming races in Indianapolis.
