The Great Gatsby Comes Alive: 5,000 Philadelphians Time Travel to the Jazz Age
*Philadelphia transforms into 1920s wonderland as Diner en Blanc celebrates literary and design history*
Picture this: 5,000 people dressed to the nines in pristine white and glittering 1920s glamour, gathering under the stars at the historic Girard College. Feathered headbands catch the evening light, bow ties are perfectly knotted, and the air buzzes with excitement. This wasn’t just another evening out—this was Philadelphia’s most spectacular tribute to the Jazz Age.
Diner en Blanc Philadelphia pulled off something truly magical on August 21st, transforming the city into a living, breathing page from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. With “100 Years of Gatsby” as this year’s theme, the event celebrated not just the centennial of *The Great Gatsby’s* publication, but also the 100th anniversary of the legendary Art Deco Exposition in Paris—the design movement that defined an era.

The elegant outdoor dining experience was more than just a dinner party; it was a time machine. Guests didn’t just show up—they *arrived*. Think pearl strands cascading over dropped-waist dresses, suspenders and bow ties, and enough vintage flair to make Jay Gatsby himself jealous. The all-white dress code, Diner en Blanc’s signature requirement, created a stunning sea of elegance against the historic backdrop of Girard College.
But this wasn’t just about looking the part. Philadelphia’s community spirit shone through every carefully planned detail, every shared laugh, and every toast raised to the night sky. In true 1920s fashion, the evening celebrated not just fashion and culture, but the joy of coming together as a city to create something extraordinary.
More Than Just a Theme Party
What made this event special wasn’t just the incredible turnout or the picture-perfect setting—it was how Philadelphia embraced the spirit of celebration that defined the Roaring Twenties. Just as the original Jazz Age represented a break from convention and an embrace of joy after difficult times, Diner en Blanc Philadelphia reminded us why we gather, why we celebrate, and why sometimes the best way to honor the past is to live fully in the present.
As the evening wound down and guests began to pack up their elegant picnics, one thing was clear: for one perfect night, Philadelphia had channeled the magic of Gatsby’s grand parties, proving that some celebrations are truly timeless.
*Old sport, Philadelphia knows how to throw a party.*
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed the music of Parlour Noir and Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society Band, and DJ Nico Oso kept energy high between performances. Themed activations included Jewelz Entertainment, croquet playing, and vintage car tours from Philly City Tours. Guests could spot baseball players in vintage Dîner en Blanc jerseys on the Girard College baseball field, and grab a photo with their 1920s jerseys. It almost felt like guests were back in the Jazz Age with sightings of The Gimlet Girls and Dandy Wellington and Gin Minsky. Chambord, the official national partner of Dîner en Blanc 2025, also hosted tastings of their black raspberry liqueur. Other entertainment included tarot card readings, face painting, and live illustrations from Denise Fike.
Guests had the opportunity to purchase a preset meal by Feast Your Eyes Catering, full of deliciously themed bites. The media section was catered by 12th Street Catering, the official catering company for all events hosted at Founder’s Hall.
