In keeping with the season’s grandeur, the Academy Museum will debut a series of refined gallery enhancements. From January 14 through March 25, an Oscars-themed cinematic montage will be showcased in the first-floor Spielberg Gallery, setting the tone for a season steeped in storytelling and spectacle. On February 14, the Academy Awards History Gallery will unveil a new rotation of iconic red carpet fashion, featuring legendary looks including Elizabeth Taylor’s gown from the 42nd Oscars (1970), Paul Reubens’ tuxedo from the 60th Oscars (1987), and Sharon Stone’s striking ensemble from the 68th Oscars (1996).
Further elevating the experience, the museum will open a new gallery on March 1 titled 19 Branches of the Academy. Developed in collaboration with the Governors of all 19 Academy branches, the gallery offers an intimate behind-the-scenes perspective on the artists and craftspeople who define cinematic excellence. Through compelling texts and rare photographs, the exhibition illuminates the Academy’s governing structure while celebrating the diverse talents and enduring careers that continue to shape the future of film.
Highlights:
The Oscars (Academy Awards) represent cinema’s most prestigious night, honoring outstanding achievements in filmmaking since 1929. This annual ceremony celebrates the art of storytelling through film, recognizing excellence across multiple categories including acting, directing, writing, and technical crafts.
Key aspects of Oscars highlights include:
Historic moments like Hattie McDaniel becoming the first African American Oscar winner (1940), Marlon Brando’s protest through Sacheen Littlefeather (1973), and the Best Picture envelope mix-up between “La La Land” and “Moonlight” (2017). Memorable acceptance speeches have ranged from heartfelt to political, with winners like Sally Field (“You like me!”), Cuba Gooding Jr.’s exuberant jump, and numerous calls for social change.
Record-breaking achievements define Oscar history: “Titanic,” “Ben-Hur,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” each won 11 awards, while Katharine Hepburn holds the record for most acting wins (4). Walt Disney received 22 competitive Oscars during his lifetime, the most by any individual.
The ceremony itself has evolved from a private dinner of 270 guests to a global television event watched by millions, featuring elaborate musical performances, tribute segments, and the iconic gold statuette designed by Cedric Gibbons. Recent years have brought changes like the addition of new categories and efforts to increase diversity among nominees and winners.
