Sophie’s BBQ — one of Pennsylvania’s most celebrated smoke houses — makes its long-awaited Philadelphia debut, and the city has never been more ready.
Luxury Lifestyle Philadelphia Spring 2026

There are restaurants, and then there are destinations. Sophie’s BBQ — the smoke-kissed crown jewel of Pennsylvania’s Main Line dining scene — has long belonged to the latter category. Now, after years of quiet anticipation and a story that reads more like a novel than a business biography, Chef Greg Herman is bringing his art form to Philadelphia for the very first time.
The announcement is as poetic as it is strategic: Sophie’s BBQ will open inside Love City Brewing’s highly anticipated second location in historic Manayunk. For Herman, this is not simply an expansion — it is a homecoming. Between 2015 and 2019, he called Manayunk home, walking these very cobblestone streets, building his craft, and quietly falling in love — with the neighborhood, and with the woman who would become his wife, and who now serves as his General Manager.
“Now his story comes full circle — and Philadelphia is the richer for it.”Sophie’s BBQ — Manayunk, Spring 2026

The partnership with Love City Brewing is the kind of synergy that feels destined. Proprietors Melissa and Kevin Walter — whose first brewery location earned a devoted following — have selected Sophie’s BBQ as the exclusive culinary partner for the Manayunk taproom’s main floor and its private event spaces above. Two of Philadelphia’s most respected names in food and drink, joining forces at the heart of a bustling historic restaurant row. The city’s discerning palate will be well served.
To say that Sophie’s rise has been anything but linear would be an understatement of the most elegant kind. What began in Ardmore with nightly sell-outs grew to a second home in Havertown — only to endure a devastating fire that might have extinguished a lesser passion. But Herman and his team rebuilt. They reopened. They sold out again, and then outgrew the space entirely. The Philadelphia announcement, nearly two years in the making, is the triumphant third act of a story defined by resilience and refined by fire — quite literally.

Before the doors officially open this spring, Philadelphians will get their first taste of what the Main Line has long savored. Sophie’s BBQ will make its city debut at the Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival — annually the largest food event in Philadelphia, the premier food truck festival in Pennsylvania, and one of the most celebrated in the country. Consider it an introduction, a preview, and a promise, all at once.
The confluence of craft, community, and culinary legacy arriving in Manayunk this spring is one of the season’s most compelling stories. From the smoke rings to the story behind them, Sophie’s BBQ isn’t just bringing barbecue to Philadelphia. It’s bringing soul.

A Menu Built for Ritual
When Sophie’s BBQ fires up inside Love City Brewing’s Manayunk taproom this spring, they won’t just be serving food — they’ll be setting a new standard for what elevated comfort looks like in Philadelphia.
Chef Greg Herman has always believed that great barbecue is an experience, not just a meal. His opening menu for the Manayunk location is a masterclass in that philosophy — a carefully curated lineup where every dish tells a story of smoke, patience, and craft. From the taproom snacks designed for sharing over a cold pint, to the slow-smoked centerpieces that have defined Sophie’s reputation across the Main Line, this is a menu that demands to be lingered over.
Begin with the Smokehouse Nachos — layered with Cooper cheese sauce, pickled red onions, and candied jalapeños, with your choice of pulled chicken, brisket, or pulled pork piled generously on top. The BBQ Sliders arrive as a trifecta: Alabama white pulled chicken, honey hot pulled pork, and KC BBQ brisket, each crowned with sweet and spicy slaw and house pickles. For something deeply indulgent, the Candy Bacon Mac — creamy macaroni topped with caramelized onions, candied bacon, and fresh chive — is nothing short of a love letter to comfort.
The sandwich program is equally commanding. The Brisket Cheesesteak — smoked brisket, caramelized onions, Cooper cheese sauce on a seeded long roll — is a Philadelphia moment through and through. And for those who prefer the plate, Sophie’s signature Coffee Rubbed Brisket, St. Louis Ribs, and Pulled Pork Shoulder are available by the half or full pound, or assembled into the showstopping BBQ Platter alongside two sides and a piece of their legendary Butterscotch Swirl Cornbread with maple blueberry butter.
Even the sides command attention — smoky BBQ beans with brisket and pork shoulder, collard greens slow-cooked in sweet and smoky pork stock, Cooper sharp and cheddar mac, and a bright, well-dressed coleslaw that cuts through the richness with precision. There is something for every palate here, including a thoughtfully crafted Smoked Vegetarian Meatloaf — Impossible meatloaf kissed with cherry wood, glazed in KC BBQ sauce, and finished with pickled veggies and Carolina mustard.
