H&M&RIO: Where Color, Culture, and Self-Expression Collide

There are cities that simply wear well — and Rio de Janeiro has always been one of them. Sun-drenched, electric, unapologetically alive. So when H&M chose the Cidade Maravilhosa as the next chapter in its global city series, the pairing felt less like a campaign decision and more like a cultural inevitability.
H&M&RIO, the Swedish giant’s latest creative exploration, arrived on May 5th in full color — quite literally. In collaboration with Brazilian creative Rafael Pavarotti, the project turns its lens on the people, the energy, and the ineffable spirit of Rio in a visual celebration that refuses to be categorized. Pavarotti, known for his deeply humanist approach to image-making, brings an intimacy to the work that luxury brands spend millions trying to manufacture. Here, it simply exists.

What makes H&M’s city series so compelling is its insistence on democracy — not in a watered-down, everyone-gets-a-trophy sense, but in the truest meaning of the word. No hierarchy. No single archetype of beauty or cool. H&M&RIO is a stage built for distinct voices, and the cast that fills it reflects the full, glorious spectrum of what self-expression looks like when it’s allowed to breathe freely.
Following the success of H&M&NEW YORK earlier this year, the Rio installment deepens what is becoming one of the more interesting ongoing narratives in fashion right now: a global house choosing to show up as a student rather than an authority. To listen before it speaks. Rio doesn’t need H&M to be beautiful — and the campaign seems to know that. That awareness is precisely what makes it work.

The result is imagery that feels alive. Saturated with the kind of color that doesn’t come from a filter but from the streets, the people, and the particular quality of light that belongs only to Rio. It is fashion as conversation, not proclamation — and in a landscape saturated with campaigns that all say the same thing in different fonts, that distinction matters.
H&M&RIO is more than a collection moment. It is a reminder that style, at its most powerful, has always been about self-possession — knowing who you are, where you come from, and wearing both without apology. IG@hm
