The Junior League of Philadelphia Gives Back With Community Partners This Fall

Promoting Nutrition, Education, and Service Across the Philadelphia Region
This fall, The Junior League of Philadelphia, Inc. (JLP) is making a meaningful impact across the region through hands-on volunteerism, community partnerships, and programs that support nutrition and wellness for families and children.
From classrooms to community gardens, JLP members are rolling up their sleeves to fight hunger and food insecurity while creating lasting change in neighborhoods throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.
Inspiring Healthy Habits With Kids in the Kitchen

Many children in Philadelphia face challenges accessing fresh, healthy food. JLP’s Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) program is designed to help change that — one recipe at a time.
Over the course of three weeks, local students participate in fun, interactive lessons that teach them how to prepare simple, healthy meals while learning what makes food nutritious and why balanced eating matters.
Each session features a hands-on recipe — from creative dishes like Fruity Face Pizza and Veggie Snails to delicious snacks like Chocolatey Yogurt Dip with Strawberry Sunflower Butter and Sheet Pan Nachos. Beyond cooking, students walk away with a sense of confidence and empowerment to make healthy choices at home and school.
“We strive to improve the health and well-being of our community through our work and to develop the capabilities of our volunteers to be impactful,” said Pam Phojanakong, President of The Junior League of Philadelphia. “Through initiatives like Kids in the Kitchen and our partnerships with local organizations, our members are addressing food insecurity head-on and helping families gain access to fresh, healthy food.”
Serving the Community Through Fall Service Weekend

This season, the JLP also hosted its annual Fall Service Weekend, a series of volunteer events in collaboration with local nonprofits dedicated to supporting the environment, families, and food access.
- Tree Planting at Riverbend Environmental Education Center: Volunteers planted trees to protect local wildlife, prevent runoff into the Schuylkill River, and help combat climate change as the city heads into winter.
- Meal Preparation with Mama-Tee’s Community Fridges: Members cooked and packaged meals for Mama-Tee’s fridges, which are strategically located near schools, senior centers, and community areas that provide free access to food.
- Food Packing with Share Food Program: Volunteers packed food boxes to be delivered to elderly residents across Philadelphia, ensuring they have nutritious meals available.
- Creative Giving with Cathedral Kitchen: At JLP Headquarters in Ardmore, members decorated placemats to brighten meal times for guests at Cathedral Kitchen — adding warmth and personal touches to the dining experience.
Each of these service projects reflects JLP’s long-standing commitment to improving access to healthy food and supporting the well-being of families across the region.
A Legacy of Women Leading Change
Since its founding in 1912, The Junior League of Philadelphia has been driven by women leaders dedicated to improving the health and wellness of underserved communities. Whether through hands-on volunteer work, educational programs, or advocacy, JLP’s members continually find innovative ways to meet local needs and make a lasting impact.
With more than 700 trained volunteers contributing thousands of hours of service annually, the JLP empowers women to lead with purpose — and to create meaningful change that ripples through communities for generations.
